Matt Krawcheck

miniature baghdadI am a Miami artist, a graduate of Kansas City Art Institute, the Yale/Norfolk painting fellowship program, and New World School of the Arts high school.

I use many different media, but my works are tied together by an evolving narrative in which fictitious, bureaucratic gnomes take care of my personal problems and come to the rescue when things get out of hand. My paintings often take a strong stand on pressing issues that get little attention in the media, issues like bureaucratic corruption in the university system, mispronunciations of precise technical terms, and the Great Computer Blunder.

The artists who have influenced my work include: Fairfield Porter, Lucien Freud, Rackstraw Downs, Kara Walker, Shazia Sikhander, and manuscript painters Behzah and Sultan Mohammed. I have been intrigued by William Kentridge's work since attending one of his presentations at MassMOCA in North Adams, MA.

The teachers who have inspired me include: Tom Wyroba (New World), Jim Hunter (New World), Aramis O'Reilly (New World), Fran Brumm (Miami-Dade Magnet Schools), Art Yanoff (Berkshire Community College), Carl Kurtz (KCAI), Leeah Joo (KCAI), Warren Rosser (KCAI), and Samuel Messer (Yale).
